Optimizing Cylinder Head Thermal Management: A Finite Element Analysis of Material Properties and Fin Geometries
Abstract
Efficient thermal regulation of the cylinder head is essential for the performance, efficiency, and longevity of internal combustion engines. This work offers an extensive numerical analysis of heat dissipation in a singlecylinder engine assembly, emphasising the combined impacts of material selection and fin geometry. The thermal performance of cylinder heads made from three different materials-Aluminium Alloy 6061, Grey Cast Iron, and Magnesium Alloy-is assessed using CATIA for 3D modelling and ANSYS for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) under specified boundary conditions, including a maximum temperature of 700°C.The inquiry encompasses the evaluation of diverse fin configurations and their effects on heat flux and temperature distribution. Results demonstrate that although fin shape alterations affect cooling patterns, material selection is the primary determinant of total thermal performance.Aluminium Alloy 6061 proved to be the superior material, providing an ideal equilibrium of elevated heat transfer rates, thermal stability (demonstrating a negligible temperature gradient of approximately 17°C), and structural efficacy.Magnesium alloy offered a feasible lightweight option with excellent heat dissipation, but grey cast iron, despite its solidity, was inferior in heat rejection. The study finds that a comprehensive design strategy that combines advanced material characteristics with optimised fin topology is crucial for improving engine heat management systems.
