Contribution of Bishnu Prasad Rabha to the Formation of the Assamese Nation
Abstract
This paper critically analyses the extraordinary contribution of Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha towards the formation and consolidation of the greater Assamese nationality.Rabha envisioned a progressive, inclusive, and exploitation-free Assamese nation rooted in the principle of "unity in diversity".He believed that the true Assamese nation could only emerge through the harmonious integration of the languages, cultures, traditions, and aspirations of Assam's diverse ethnic communities -including tribal, non-tribal, hill, and plain populations.Through his revolutionary art, literature, music (Rabha Sangeet), dance, theatre, and films, Rabha consistently promoted the idea of a new democratic and socialist Assamese culture (Nava-Asamiya Sanskriti) that belonged to the toiling rural masses and peasants rather than to any elite class.Living among sixteen different linguistic communities, mastering their languages and folk forms, and distributing his ancestral property among poor peasants, he practised what he preached. His political activism within the communist movement, combined with fierce anti-imperialist and anti-feudal positions, reinforced his cultural mission.Rabha warned that contempt by so-called higher classes towards lower classes and the neglect of smaller nationalities would weaken the greater Assamese nation. He granted full national dignity to every ethnic community while advocating class struggle as an essential component of genuine national integration. His life and works remain a beacon for building an egalitarian, secular, and culturally rich Assamese identity even in contemporary times.
