Durability Assessment of Sustainable Fly Ash–GGBFS Geopolymer Concrete for Aggressive Environmental Conditions
Abstract
Durability performance of geopolymer concrete is a very important aspect that regulates the longevity of structure concrete usage especially in situations where the environment is hostile. This paper examines the durability nature of M30 grade geopolymer concrete manufactured by using a binary system of binder consisting of fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag in a 60: 40 ratio, activated with an 8 molar solution of alkalinity.Durability characteristics such as water uptake, acid attack resistance, and sulphate attack resistance were tested at ambient conditions during the process of curing. The findings show that the geopolymer concrete had low water absorption and high resistance to chemical attack as compared to the systems based on conventional cement.Thick geopolymer network that was created in response to the synergistic effect between fly ash and GGBFS greatly restricted the penetration of undesirable ions. The paper establishes that fly ash-GGBFS geopolymer concrete is a viable and sustainable substitute to be used as a structural concrete when subjected to aggressive environment.
