NOVEL ENERGY CONSERVATION IN A NETWORK OF GPS RECEIVERS
Abstract
High energy consumption due to frequent cellular transmission remains a critical limitation in battery-powered Global Positioning System (GPS) deployments, particularly in large-scale and remote monitoring scenarios. This paper proposes a novel energy-conservation architecture in which ZigBee (IEEE 802.15.4) is integrated into GPS receivers to enable local data aggregation and rotational cellular uplink transmission.GPS nodes exchange location data over a low-power ZigBee mesh; while a rotating primary access network coordinator (PANC) forwards aggregated data to a remote server via cellular communication.Analytical modeling demonstrates that, for a network of 100 GPS devices transmitting at 10-minute intervals, the proposed scheme reduces total transmission energy consumption by approximately 70% compared to conventional architectures. The proposed approach significantly extends device lifetime without compromising data integrity or timeliness, making it suitable for large-scale tracking and monitoring applications
