A Study on the Use of Recycled Fibres in Sustainable Apparel Manufacturing
Abstract
The apparel industry significantly pollutes the environment due to high resource use, energy-intensive production, and large amounts of textile waste. The rapid growth of fast fashion has worsened this problem by increasing clothing production and disposal. To address these challenges, using recycled fibres in apparel manufacturing has become a popular sustainable choice compared to new raw materials.Recycled fibres come from pre-consumer and post-consumer textile waste, as well as plastic waste, which helps reduce landfill waste and environmental harm. This review examines existing research on the sources, types, recycling processes, applications, benefits, limitations, and impacts of recycled fibres in apparel manufacturing. The study also explores future prospects and technological improvements that can enhance fibre quality and support circular fashion. It concludes that recycled fibres are essential for achieving sustainability in the apparel industry and crucial for transitioning to a circular economy.
