SURVEY OF REDUNDANCY SYSTEMS IN ARUBA OS-CX
Abstract
Network redundancy is a fundamental requirement for ensuring uninterrupted service delivery, fault tolerance, and high availability in modern enterprise and data center environments.Aruba OS-CX, the next-generation network operating system by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, introduces a multilayered redundancy architecture encompassing hardware, software, control plane, and data plane mechanisms. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of redundancy systems in Aruba OS-CX, highlighting the design of chassis-based hardware failover, Virtual Switching Framework (VSF) for software-level redundancy, Virtual Switching Extension (VSX) for distributed high availability, and data path resilience through Link Aggregation (LAG) and Multi-Chassis LAG (MC-LAG).Control plane redundancy mechanisms, including Non-Stop Forwarding (NSF) and Graceful Restart, are analyzed alongside innovations such as hitless software upgrades (ISSU, VSX Rolling Upgrade).A comparative analysis with equivalent redundancy models from Cisco Systems provides further context. The survey identifies key operational trade-offs associated with redundancy deployment, such as complexity versus manageability and resource overheads. This work aims to support network architects, researchers, and engineers in understanding best practices for designing resilient network infrastructures leveraging Aruba OS-CX.Future research directions focusing on predictive redundancy, automation, and AIdriven failover are discussed.
