Impact of Musical Environment on Diner Perceptions and Loyalty in All-Day Dining Restaurants
Abstract
In the competitive landscape of the hospitality industry, enhancing the overall dining experience is key to customer retention.Among the various sensory elements that influence guest perception, ambient music plays a crucial role in shaping diner emotions, satisfaction, and loyalty. This study investigates the impact of the musical environment on diner perceptions and customer loyalty in all-day dining restaurants, were service spans across different dayparts and customer demographics. The research examines musical elements such as tempo, volume, genre, and time appropriateness, and their influence on diner comfort, perception of service quality, and repeat visit intentions. The study also explores the importance of music congruence-the alignment between music and the restaurant's theme or brand identity.A quantitative, empirical approach is adopted, using structured questionnaires administered to customers in selected all-day dining establishments. The data collected evaluates customer preferences and satisfaction with background music, emotional response, and likelihood of return. The findings show that soothing, moderatevolume music enhances satisfaction during breakfast and lunch, while more vibrant music in the evening contributes to a lively atmosphere. However, mismatched or loud music negatively impacts comfort and customer loyalty. Results also suggest that customer response to music varies by age group, visit purpose, and time of day, indicating the need for tailored music programming. The study concludes that background music is not just an aesthetic element but a strategic tool to influence guest behaviour and loyalty. It offers practical recommendations for restaurant managers to optimize their sound environment based on customer expectations and brand consistency.
