Supra-Mitral Ring in a Toddler: A Rare Case Report
Abstract
Supra-mitral ring (SMR) is a rare congenital cardiac anomaly characterised by a membrane located above the mitral valve annulus, resulting in varying degrees of mitral stenosis (MS). We report a case of a 3-year-old female with a history of surgically corrected ventricular septal defect (VSD), who presented with increasing exertional dyspnea. Echocardiography revealed a supra-mitral ring causing mitral inflow obstruction and left atrial enlargement. Early recognition and timely surgical intervention are essential for preventing long-term complications. This case emphasises the importance of comprehensive echocardiographic evaluation in children with prior congenital heart surgeries and new-onset symptoms
