Abstract

In Ayurveda, Shira (the head) is considered the most vital part of the body and is accorded the highest significance among the Trimarmas. It is viewed as the seat of the major sense organs and the centre of Prana, making it essential for sustaining life and coordinating all sensory and intellectual functions.Classical descriptions mention that the head is the first structure to develop in the fetus and houses all the Indriyas, underscoring its foundational role in overall health.Within the group of Shirorogas, Ardhavabhedaka is described as a condition marked by severe, one-sided headache accompanied by heaviness, stiffness, and disturbances in sensory perception. The explanation of its origin varies among the classical authors: Charaka attributes it mainly to a Vatakapha imbalance, whereas Sushruta describes it as involving all three Doshas, making it Tridoshaja in nature. When viewed through a contemporary lens, many of the clinical features of Ardhavabhedaka closely parallel those of migraine, a chronic neurovascular condition known for recurrent unilateral headache, nausea, and heightened sensitivity to light and sound.Ayurvedic treatment aims to correct the underlying imbalance of doshas and restore functional harmony. This is achieved through a combination of Rasayana therapy, cleansing procedures such as Nasya and Virechana, and Shamana herbal formulations that help pacify aggravated Doshas. These interventions are further supported by appropriate dietary practices, lifestyle adjustments, and stress-reducing methods including yoga and pranayama. The striking similarity between Ardhavabhedaka and migraine illustrates how Ayurveda offers a comprehensive and integrative approach, addressing both the root causes and symptomatic aspects of the disorder.Such holistic management ultimately enhances the patient's quality of life and helps reduce the frequency of recurrence.
