Shushkakshipaka w.s.r. to Dry Eye Syndrome - An Integrative Review
Abstract
Shushkakshipaka is described in Ayurvedic literature as a Vata-Pittaja Netra Roga marked by ocular dryness, irritation, burning sensation, redness, and discomfort. These manifestations closely resemble Dry Eye Syndrome (DES), a common ocular surface disorder recognized in modern ophthalmology. The rising prevalence of DES is attributed to prolonged digital screen use, environmental stressors, aging, and systemic disorders.Ayurveda explains Shushkakshipaka through Dosha imbalance, Dhatu kshaya, and impairment of ocular lubrication mechanisms, and offers effective therapeutic measures such as Kriyakalpa, Nasya, Shamana Chikitsa, and Rasayana therapy. This review critically evaluates Shushkakshipaka in correlation with Dry Eye Syndrome, emphasizing similarities in etiopathogenesis, clinical presentation, and management principles from both Ayurvedic and contemporary medical perspectives. The integrative approach discussed in this review highlights the relevance of Ayurveda in the long-term management of Dry Eye Syndrome.
