Abstract

Marital satisfaction encompasses several aspects of functioning, such as the degree of happiness, adjustment and stability that a couple experiences in their relationship. This conceptual paper presents a theoretical discussion on the joint influence of time perspective and procrastination on the marital satisfaction of couples.Time perspective is the way people think about and divide their experiences into past, present, and future, whereas procrastination is a failure to self, regulate by putting off a task even when negative consequences are foreseen.Even though time perspective and procrastination as separate constructs have been extensively researched in the areas of personality and behavior, the combined influence of these two factors on marital relationships is still a novelty. The present paper, thus, via time perspective theory, self, regulation theories, and marital adjustment studies, puts forward an idea on the interconnection of time orientation, procrastination, and satisfaction in a marital relationship. This model is based on the argument that one's perception of time has an impact on one's delay behavior which, in turn, influences one's level of satisfaction in the relationship. This paper touches on the three dimensions i.e. cognitive, emotional, and behavioral mechanisms that mediate the relationship of time perspective and procrastination with marital satisfaction and also gives directions to marital counseling and future research.
