Abstract

India's National Education Policy 2020 has brought forth an era of reform in Indian education by providing the opportunity for Information and Communication Technology to be situated as a central pillar for instructional innovation, equitable access and systemic upgrading within the educational environment of India. In addition to its potential benefits on learning outcomes, the increasing importance and popularity of technology as a mode of learning globally is creating an educational system that is dependent on, or enhanced by, technology, which provides students' personal access to educational materials and support for higher levels of conceptual understanding. This chapter demonstrates the application of ICT in Indian education through the lens of two perspectives: first, the opportunities for innovation and the second, the structural, technical, pedagogical and ethical challenges presented by the transition from traditional brick-and-mortar schools to online platforms. This chapter builds upon the existing research and theoretical backgrounds, such as Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge and SAMR Model to provide an overview of ICT as a means of enhancing and associate education.Research shows that ICT has the potential to improve student learning by providing interactivity, immediate feedback, collaborative learning, and multimodal instructional support. While there are potential benefits of integrating ICT into Indian education, many challenges will hinder effective implementation of ICT.These include: (1) Digital inequality (2) Lack of teacher training (3) Inconsistent on-again/off-again infrastructure (4) Cyber security and (5) Resistance from educators. The chapter also describes the role of the NETF, DIKSHA, NDEAR, PARAKH and the National Digital Education Construction in encouraging the advancement of ICT in Indian education. Finally, the chapter provides recommendations and a set of practical implications for the education leadership, government policymakers and institutions to continue to strive toward aligning with the vision outlined in the NEP 2020.
