RHYTHM INSTRUMENTS IN INDIAN MUSIC: STRUCTURE AND PERFORMANCE ROLE
Abstract
Rhythm (tal) is a fundamental element of Indian music and provides the temporal structure for musical performance. Rhythm instruments, known as tal vadya, have been used in Indian music from early periods to the present and play an important role in maintaining rhythmic order. These instruments are not limited to accompaniment but are also associated with social and cultural practices. This paper examines the classification, construction, and functional role of rhythm instruments in Indian music, focusing on their use in performance contexts.
