Abstract

Sleep is essential for physiological restoration, learning, memory consolidation, and overall growth and development. Adequate sleep enables adolescents to perform effectively in academic activities, sports, and other extracurricular pursuits. Adopting appropriate sleep hygiene practices plays a crucial role in improving sleep quality during adolescence. Aim: To investigate the relationship between sleep hygiene practices and sleep quality among adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 adolescents. Sleep hygiene practices were assessed using the Adolescent Sleep Hygiene Scale (ASHS), consisting of 28 items, while sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) with 19 items. The collected data were scored and interpreted according to standard guidelines. Statistical analysis was performed to determine the association between sleep hygiene practices and sleep quality. Results: The findings revealed that 64% of adolescents had good sleep hygiene practices, while 36% demonstrated average sleep hygiene practices. Regarding sleep quality, 73% of adolescents reported good sleep quality, whereas 27% had average sleep quality. A highly significant association was found between sleep hygiene practices and sleep quality (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The study concludes that better sleep hygiene practices are significantly associated with improved sleep quality among adolescents. Promoting proper sleep hygiene is essential for enhancing adolescents’ health and academic performance and for preventing the early onset of sleep-related disorders and adult-onset diseases.
