Abstract

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have revolutionized accessible education, yet designing them for diverse platforms—such as web browsers, mobile apps, and learning management systems—presents multifaceted challenges. This paper explores key hurdles including platform interoperability, adaptive content delivery, learner engagement across devices, accessibility compliance, and scalability under varying bandwidth conditions. For instance, content optimized for desktops often fails on mobiles, leading to high dropout rates exceeding 90% in some MOOCs. We propose targeted solutions: modular micro-learning frameworks for cross-platform compatibility, AI-driven personalization engines to tailor experiences, gamified interactive elements for sustained engagement, universal design principles ensuring WCAG adherence, and edge-computing strategies for low-latency delivery. Drawing from case studies like Coursera's mobile adaptations and edX's responsive designs, our analysis reveals that hybrid architectures reduce technical friction by 40-60%. These interventions not only mitigate platform-specific pitfalls but also enhance equity in global education. Ultimately, this study offers a blueprint for educators and developers to create resilient MOOCs, fostering inclusive learning ecosystems amid rapid technological evolution.
