Abstract
The study aimed to clarify the function of contemporary sociology from a new and modern perspective, namely sustainable development, and to explain its relationship with it. It also sought to highlight this function and relationship from a theoretical standpoint through the works of the pioneers of sociology and subsequent scholars, to examine the reality of this function, and to reveal the state of divergence between sociology and sociologists on the one hand, and development policy planners and decision-makers on the other. Using a critical descriptive approach, and in a manner resembling an academic plea through the mobilization of views and evidence, the researcher attempted to demonstrate that sociology has a scientific and societal function, to which a guiding function was added. This guiding function aims, in general, at social change, which the researcher argued is synonymous with the concept of development and closely related to sustainable development. Accordingly, sustainable development becomes the primary field of sociology in terms of study, production, and guidance. Therefore, sociology can be considered legitimately entitled to study development as a field of knowledge, with an emphasis on the importance of coordination and cooperation with all other sciences, benefiting from them—whether social and human sciences or even applied sciences. However, reality does not reflect this vision, as sociology is experiencing a state of isolation and marginalization, and perhaps even rupture, with development policy planners and decision-makers. This situation necessitates a reconsideration of these relationships by all parties in order to correct them and strengthen the paths of sustainable development within societies, aiming to achieve a better quality of life for humanity through the contribution of sociology to the formulation of practical development models that are more inclusive and just.
