Abstract

“Developing a 2.5D rendering engine” presents the design and implementation of a lightweight 2.5D rendering library shaped for developing retro-style games on the .NET platform. The idea behind the project was to bypass the problems and limitations of modern game engines, which often include unnecessary complexity and large file sizes when used to develop simple, stylized games inspired by the games of the early 1990s, such as Wolfenstein 3D. Existing rendering solutions were analysed and techniques used in 2.5D graphics were identified. Based on this research, a custom rendering library was created. It supports floor, ceiling, wall, and sprite rendering, and can render a fog effect to improve graphics visual depth. In addition to that, a JSON-based map loading system was implemented, which allowed easy integration of level data from external files.
