Acronyms as Propaganda: A Morphological Study of Tokopedia’s WIB in Indonesian Digital Advertising
Abstract
This research looks at how the acronyms WIB is used in Tokopedia's internet ads, paying close attention to its word structure, how it sends messages, and how it affects beliefs. WIB, which first meant Western Indonesian Time, is cleverly given a new meaning as Indonesia Shopping Time to get people to buy things online. By carefully looking at written ads, the study explores how the acronyms's well-known word structure makes new meanings possible, helps people remember it, and fits in with ways to convince people in internet ads. The results show that WIB works in several ways: as a word structure, as a repeated way to send messages in ads, and as a quiet method of gently promoting business that makes shopping seem normal in daily time and cultural habits. The study shows how word choices in internet ads can have effects on beliefs, changing how customers see things and supporting what is normal in culture.
