Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has shifted the learning patterns of high school students from a teacher-centered approach to independent, informal learning through social media. This study aims to explore how students of SMA Negeri 1 Seluma perceive social media as an informal learning platform. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design involving 37 students in grade X.B. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, participant observation of students' digital activities, and documentation of online interactions. The results show that social media serves as a quick reference source for understanding difficult concepts, a collaborative learning space supported by WhatsApp discussions, and an alternative source of contextual knowledge through platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Students demonstrated the ability to identify information needs, evaluate content credibility, and apply information to complete school assignments. However, various challenges were also identified, such as digital distractions, unreliable content, and inequality in internet access. This study concludes that social media has strong potential as an informal learning environment for students when used critically, purposefully, and with appropriate guidance.
