Consciousness in Love
Abstract
This is an essay on love and consciousness. I propose that these phenomena are connected in ways that have not been appreciated. Specifically, I argue that consciousness is the work of making relationships, and that love is a dedication to the undertaking of this work. My aim is to open up new ways of understanding the natures of love and consciousness both, and also, the whole project of trying to understand their place in human and indeed animal life. I suggest we need to rethink biology too, to allow for the centrality of love and consciousness as, in a way, forms of cognitive or spiritual metabolism.
