Abstract

Seaweed farming is emerging as a significant contributor to environmental and economic resilience, especially in vulnerable coastal communities. However, the industry faces complex challenges posed by climate change, including rising ocean temperatures, acidification, and extreme weather events. Decentralised, innovative farming models—such as pre-seeded modular floating farms and on-site micro-processing units—present scalable solutions for sustainable seaweed commercialization. This chapter examines these models’ role in creating economic opportunities while supporting climate resilience, promoting decentralised production, and contributing to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through adaptive strategies and sustainable practices, seaweed farming can mitigate climate impacts while empowering coastal livelihoods.
