Autism Spectrum Condition: An Update on its Understanding and Clinical Perspective
Abstract
Autism spectrum condition (ASC) is a multifaceted neurobiological entity characterized by challenges in communication, social interaction, and a propensity for repetitive behaviors. The conceptualization of ASC has evolved significantly since Paul Eugen Bleuler first introduced the term “autism” in 1912. This chapter traces the historical development of ASC, emphasizing its trajectory from a focus on deficits for a recognition of individual strengths and diversity within the spectrum. Current estimates suggest a rising prevalence of ASC, attributed to both expanded diagnostic criteria and increased awareness. The clinical perspective on ASC underscores a range of symptoms affecting various domains, from social communication to emotional regulation, informing a comprehensive diagnostic and intervention framework. As research continues to illuminate the genetic, neurobiological, and environmental underpinnings of the condition, effective management strategies—ranging from psychological to pharmacological interventions—are being refined. Despite advancements, challenges remain in understanding ASC’s complexities and improving support systems for affected individuals and their families.
