Abstract

This chapter examines the role of mobile applications in enhancing the productivity of smallholder farmers in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. It examines their implications for sustainable food security. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study analyzed data from 220 smallholder farmers to assess their socio-economic characteristics, mobile application usage patterns, and the benefits and challenges associated with technology adoption. The findings indicate that many farmers actively use mobile applications, especially WhatsApp and Facebook, to access vital agricultural information, manage farm operations, and communicate with peers. However, the study further highlights critical barriers to adoption, including high costs, limited network coverage, and varying levels of digital literacy. The analysis reveals that education, income, and social networks influence the likelihood of mobile application usage among farmers. This suggests the need for targeted interventions to promote digital literacy and enhance access to technology. The results suggest that, when effectively integrated into agricultural practices, mobile applications have the potential to significantly improve smallholder farmers’ productivity and contribute to food security. This chapter advocates for strategic policies that empower smallholder farmers through infrastructure development, educational initiatives, and community support mechanisms. The results highlight the critical role of mobile technology in strengthening agricultural resilience and enhancing the quality of life for smallholder farmers in the area.
