Abstract

The banking sector is at a transformative crossroads, driven by technological innovation, evolving regulations, and the imperative for sustainability. This chapter investigates how banks are responding to these challenges through FinTech adoption, regulatory adaptation, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) integration. It finds that artificial intelligence (AI) and big data analytics are significantly enhancing risk management and customer personalization, while blockchain improves transaction security and efficiency. Regulatory frameworks like Basel III and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) are promoting financial stability but pose operational burdens, especially for smaller institutions. On sustainability, the chapter reveals that ESG-aligned products such as green bonds and sustainability-linked loans are gaining traction, though measurement inconsistencies and greenwashing remain obstacles. Real-world cases, including ING, BNP Paribas, and JPMorgan, illustrate successful strategies. Overall, the chapter provides actionable insights into how banks can align innovation and compliance with long-term environmental and social goals, offering a practical roadmap for navigating the future of banking.
