4D Conformal Pilot Cueing for Rotorcraft: Enhancing Decision-Making through Battle Management System Integration
Abstract
Rotorcraft pilots engaged in Army operational scenarios encounter complex challenges, particularly under degraded visual environments (DVE) and contested threat conditions. Traditional cockpit displays and auditory alerts often overload pilot cognition and do not fully integrate with modern networked combat systems. This chapter presents a 4D conformal pilot cueing system that utilizes Tau Theory for predictive, intuitive, and spatially aligned guidance to support obstacle avoidance and tactical decision-making. The method integrates time-sensitive bank angle cueing into head-up display (HUD), enhancing pilot situational awareness, and reducing workload. We further explore how such a system interfaces with Battle Management Systems (BMS), enabling real-time data fusion, dynamic threat avoidance, and coordinated mission execution across air and ground platforms. The simulation results validate the performance of the cue method in varying obstacle sizes and pilot skill levels. Future work includes human-in-the-loop tests and BMS-driven cue integration for mission adaptability and resilience.
