Joining of Advanced Ceramics and Metals

The high hardness and brittleness of ceramic materials make them difficult to machine. Joining has been considered an ideal way to overcome this barrier. Additionally, since metals have low corrosion resistance, bonding ceramics to metals is an effective method to address their shortcomings. Various joining techniques for ceramics to ceramics and/or ceramics to metals have been developed, which are generally categorized as brazing, diffusion bonding, reaction bonding, ultrasonic welding, and adhesive joining. This chapter will discuss these joining techniques.
