Empowering Higher Education through Virtual Worlds: Competency-Based and Experiential Learning in the Metaverse
Abstract
The rapid evolution of immersive technologies is reshaping the future of higher education. The metaverse, understood as an interconnected and persistent virtual environment, offers universities the opportunity to create learning experiences that go beyond traditional classrooms and digital platforms. This chapter explores the potential of virtual worlds to support competency-based and experiential learning, positioning students as active participants in dynamic, collaborative, and creative environments. By integrating simulation, experimentation, and social interaction, the metaverse enables the development of both technical and transversal skills, bridging the gap between theory and practice. Practical examples from disciplines such as health sciences, engineering, and social sciences demonstrate the value of immersive learning for fostering motivation, innovation, and intercultural communication. At the same time, critical challenges remain, including digital inequality, infrastructure costs, teacher training, cognitive overload, and ethical concerns around privacy and sustainability. The chapter argues that the true potential of the metaverse in higher education lies not in its technological novelty but in its pedagogical intentionality, inclusiveness, and strategic design. Looking ahead, the integration of the metaverse with artificial intelligence, learning analytics, and sustainable practices could consolidate its role as a transformative catalyst, preparing future professionals for the demands of an interconnected and rapidly changing world.
