Perspective Chapter: Auditory Rehabilitation in Challenging Cases – Strategies and Outcomes
Abstract
The generalization of auditory rehabilitation is not acceptable today, especially considering the significant advances in diagnostics and the understanding of the various conditions that affect the auditory system. Each auditory pathology can manifest distinct audible behaviors and needs, requiring individualized therapeutic approaches. Hence, the objective of this chapter is to explore the various therapeutic possibilities available, which include not only the use of hearing devices but also adaptive methodologies and therapeutic approaches aimed at auditory rehabilitation in different clinical scenarios specifically auditory neuropathy, Down syndrome, non-progressive chronic encephalopathies, and autism. Interventions can vary from the use of hearing aids suitable for the patient’s auditory profile to rehabilitation programs that incorporate auditory stimulation techniques and social skills training, which are essential for the overall development of these children, as well as the inclusion of bilingual plans using sign language. The importance of an accurate diagnosis and the definition of an appropriate rehabilitation plan are fundamental to maximizing the effectiveness of these interventions. Additionally, approaches such as hearing rehabilitation techniques, listening training, and communication-centered interventions can complement the use of devices and provide a holistic approach to rehabilitation. It is essential to consider cultural and educational factors in the treatment process, as these aspects can influence the adaptation and success of each individual’s auditory rehabilitation. This requires collaborative work among professionals from different areas, such as audiologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and educators, along with the family, to develop a therapeutic plan that meets specific needs.
