The Impacts of Unsustainable Urbanization on the Cultural Heritage
Abstract
Unsustainable urbanization poses a threat to cultural heritage. Conserving cultural heritage is essential for sustainable urban development and is considered a crucial issue on global agendas. This study aims to assess the multifaceted impacts of unsustainable urbanization on cultural heritage. To achieve this goal, a scoping review was conducted. The findings indicate that the development dimension should emphasize humanistic and ecological aspects, recognizing that cultural heritage is vital for achieving sustainable urban environments. In addition, effective conservation strategies are necessary to safeguard cultural heritage sites and mitigate the impacts of urban development, specifically in historical areas. Thus, heritage conservation should be considered an integral part of the urban planning process to avoid the impacts of unsustainable urbanization and protect cultural heritage sites through various proactive and holistic tools. The study recommended conducting further research on aspects of cultural heritage management. For example, the environmental impacts of climate change still require in-depth investigation.
