Abstract

Much like Prometheus bringing fire to the darkened world of humans and lighting the way to civilization, digitalization of learning practices serves as a spark for integrating contemporary ideologies with conventional andragogical structures, providing the opportunity to construct a curriculum that is both innovative and responsive to the evolving needs of medical students. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the evolution of traditional, in-person curricula into hybrid models, as social limitations necessitated the blending of different instructional approaches. In Pakistan, the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PM&DC) has implemented the Integrated Modular Curriculum (IMC). Faculty and students at Aziz Fatimah Medical and Dental College, Faisalabad, recently conducted a phenomenological study aimed at exploring both the perceived benefits and challenges encountered by students navigating this newly adopted framework. Following the initial study’s publication, a supplementary investigation was conducted to explore participants’ perspectives on technology-enhanced learning in the modular system. The participants largely agreed that the IMC has integrated digital methods as one of its core educational elements. Key benefits identified by students included increased curricular engagement, blending of educational and administrative functions, and compatibility with international educational standards. Conversely, students faced systemic challenges with navigating between different management systems, lack of cohesion between institutional curriculum and external digital resources, and pitfalls in the orientation of faculty with newly introduced digital approaches. These findings offer valuable, student-centered insights for institutions to address gaps in digital integration in the field of medical education so that they may build a sustained system of digital innovation and academic progress.
