From E-books to Intelligent Content: Advancing Smart Book Development in Digital Libraries
Abstract
This chapter explores the evolution of digital reading materials, from static electronic texts to context-aware adaptive publications that respond to individual user needs. It begins by tracing the history of e-books, highlighting key milestones in format standardization, distribution, and user interface design. It then introduces the concept of “smart books.” Through a detailed examination of semantic enrichment techniques, I demonstrate how machine-readable markup and linked data can transform simple text into intelligent content capable of suggesting related materials, summarizing complex passages, and supporting targeted searches. The chapter then surveys adaptive reading systems that customize layout, navigation, and content delivery based on reader behavior, device type, and accessibility needs. The case studies demonstrate implementations in academic and public digital libraries, showcasing improvements in engagement, understanding, and discoverability. Finally, I discuss technical challenges such as interoperability, metadata quality, and privacy concerns, and offer best practices for integrating smart book technologies into existing digital library platforms. Ending with a forward-looking perspective, the chapter highlights emerging trends and research directions that will shape the next generation of intelligent reading experiences.
