Abstract

What if a user could steady performance before it slips? This chapter shows how brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) turn that promise into practice by making three essentials – cognitive readiness (planning and flexibility), situational awareness (perceiving what matters), and motivation/willpower (sustained effort) – measurable, coachable, and coordinated in real time. This chapter introduces a vendor-agnostic, closed-loop “anticipate → cue → lockout → learn” policy that forecasts near-term lapse risk (3–10 seconds ahead), delivers a single well-timed micro-intervention, and then audits what it prevented (e.g., prevented-lapse rate, lead-time, intervention yield). Readers get a clean theory-to-operations bridge: classic foundations – Rasmussen’s skills–rules–knowledge (SRK) control framework, spacing and retrieval practice from learning science, and cognitive load theory – are translated into concrete loop actions; network connectivity explains why even high-ability people falter under stress; and a trait–state–motivation profile personalizes training over weeks, not just minutes. SRK clarifies when to automate versus assist; spacing/retrieval shapes micro-interventions that stick; and Cognitive Load sets task and UI constraints so cues help rather than hinder. Applications span classrooms, flight and mission operations, surgical training, rehabilitation, athletics, and high-stakes decision-making – each using the same control logic with domain-specific tuning. The authors close with evaluation designs (AB/ABA, crossover) and clear ethical guardrails (privacy, transparency, equity). The result is a practical playbook for researchers, educators, clinicians, and operators who need resilient, auditable gains – when performance under pressure really matters.
