WACCM-X solar-eclipse simulation data for TOM-like mesospheric ozone enhancement
Abstract
This dataset contains curated WACCM-X model output supporting the study "Tertiary-ozone-maximum-like mesospheric ozone increases driven by solar eclipses: sensitivity experiments on WACCM-X". The data are designed to diagnose the rapid photochemical response of mesospheric ozone during solar eclipses and to isolate the roles of HOx-catalyzed ozone loss, odd-oxygen repartitioning, water-vapor photolysis, Chapman-cycle photolysis, and energetic particle precipitation. The files include baseline and solar-eclipse simulations, mechanism-oriented sensitivity experiments with selected photolysis rates fixed to non-eclipse values, source-diagnostic outputs for HOx and O3, and synthetic EPP sensitivity experiments. The main events represented are the 14 December 2020 solar eclipse and the 2 October 2024 annular solar eclipse. Only eclipse-window outputs were retained. For 2020-12-14, retained filename tails are `54300`, `57900`, `61500`, `65100`, `68700`, and `72300`. For 2024-10-02, retained filename tails are `57600`, `61200`, `64800`, `68400`, `72000`, and `75600`.All data files are valid classic NetCDF 64-bit offset files. To reduce file size for public release while preserving the scientific target region, the vertical section was subset to `lev=86` and `ilev=87`, retaining pressure levels from `1.27408739252155e-07` to `103.317126631737` hPa for `lev`, and from `1.11565080074215e-07` to `111.69321089983` hPa for `ilev`. This range covers the stratospheric ozone layer through the lower thermosphere. Variables without `lev` or `ilev` dimensions were retained unchanged.
