Charcoal Grace
Abstract
On Charcoal Grace, Brisbane progressive metal band Caligula's Horse examines the experience and implications of the 2019 COVID pandemic from the perspective of the band and those surrounding them. Built around the eponymous 24-minute four-part song suite, the record takes a sincere and probing dive into the way society bent and fractured through those years of isolation and alienation, ultimately turning those observations towards a hopeful view to a common future.Darker and more dense than the band’s previous five records, Charcoal Grace deliberately positions variation in dynamics and instrumentation at the forefront of its production aesthetic. Supplemented by a small orchestra, an exploratory use of synths and other digital instruments, and a willingness to manipulate and stretch the rock band at the record’s core to the expressive needs of the concept, Charcoal Grace reflects the dislocation, grief, and search for meaning those years predicated.
