Student Stress in India: A Silent Epidemic Demanding Urgent Action
Abstract
Student stress has emerged as a critical mental health concern in India, particularly within the context of an exam-oriented education system and intense societal expectations. While stress is a normal adaptive response, its chronic presence among students has been linked to anxiety disorders, depression, sleep disturbances, burnout, and suicidal ideation. This study examines the prevalence, causes, and consequences of stress among Indian undergraduate students and explores effective coping mechanisms and support systems. Using a mixed-methods approach involving quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, the study highlights excessive academic pressure as the primary stressor, compounded by parental expectations, peer pressure, financial strain, and emotional isolation. The findings underscore the urgent need for systemic educational reforms, parental sensitization, and accessible mental health interventions to address this growing public health challenge
