Convergence of Forensic Anthropology and Computer Science: Advancements and Applications in Forensic Analysis
Abstract
Forensic anthropology, traditionally focused on analyzing human skeletal remains to assist legal investigations, is now experiencing a transformative integration with the field of computer science. This interdisciplinary collaboration introduces advanced computational techniques into forensic work, enhancing the accuracy, speed, and scope of analyses. This paper explores how this emerging connection is shaping the discipline, particularly in three key areas: the digital reconstruction of human remains, the use of machine learning to detect and interpret patterns, and the development of virtual reality environments for reconstructing crime scenes. We start by considering the function of digital technology in the reconstruction and visualization of bone structures that enable forensic anthropologists to study broken remains with unprecedented precision.Machine learning methods, specifically machine learning image recognition and classification techniques, are next considered in terms of their ability to computerize the detection of skeletal features and irregularities, enhancing the speed and accuracy of forensic analysis. The present article describes the revolutionary impact of upcoming technologies in forensic science, including biometric identification, forensic dentistry, crime scene reconstruction, and integration of extended reality (XR) technology. In biometric identification, future advancements in facial recognition, fingerprint identification, and the Multi-Biometric Identification Solution (MBIS) enhance accuracy and efficiency of investigation and present solutions to ethical questions.Artificial intelligence (AI) benefits forensic dentistry in the assessment of biological age and gender, examination of dental disorders, and voice-operated chairs and bioprinting technology revolutionizing dental practice.Re-construction of crime scenes with technology has been greatly enhanced through the use of 3D laser scanning to document and analyze evidence accurately, particularly in complex cases.XR technologies, including AR and VR, also improved forensic investigation and education by allowing immersive training, enhanced visualization at the crime scene, and collaboration among forensic specialists.Big data analytics and IoT devices are also highlighted as central to solving complex evidence profiles and creating timelines in forensic investigation.Cumulatively, these developments facilitate a more precise, effective, and informed system of justice, highlighting the need for ongoing innovation in forensic science. The application of computer science to forensic anthropology not only supplements conventional practices but also creates new avenues for inquiry and application. This interdisciplinary methodology has the potential to enrich the validity and range of forensic investigation, making valuable contributions to criminal justice.
