LES INCLASSABLES. Animalités hybrides et « fin de règne » dans les bestiaires de Leonora Carrington et Unica Zürn
Abstract
The expressions ‘hors-série’ and ‘fin de règne’, which Breton uses to define the creatures in the Surrealist bestiaries, will be used in this article as crucial concepts for an analysis of the artistic and literary works of Leonora Carrington and Unica Zürn. While respecting their respective differences, we will compare their works, highlighting the ethical, aesthetic and political importance of the presence of hybrid and metamorphic creatures. Questioning the sense and meaning of an entire population that transcends the boundaries of the known and the real by challenging and undermining the willingness to recognise and identify, leads to an understanding of the critical and programmatic scope of the artistic and literary work of the authors and artists concerned.
