Abstract

A Bestiary of the Anthropocene, written by the Disnovation.org collective and Nicolas Nova, brings together sixty hybrid species resulting from human interaction with the world around them. These species are in the making, and the corpus is potentially infinite; the only exhaustiveness sought is that of the modes of hybridization. Based on the formal model of the medieval bestiary, the individual files develop a discourse that follows the scientific model, devoid of morality. Yet a thought is born from the interaction between the different image captions, and between these images and the text. These editing effects, not devoid of humor, create confusion in a discourse that is only neutral in appearance. They invite readers to see the world around them, and beyond criticism, to empower themselves to open up other futures.
