Abstract

One of the first and most consequential steps of a CT-scan is positioning the sample in the scanner. For all but the simplest applications, this is a highly complex task, for which operators rely on experience and rules of thumb. The principle of exploiting simulation, using a (CAD) model of the sample geometry, to guide the choice of sample pose is well known, but in contrast to previous efforts on this challenge, our approach is based on a high-performance simulation capability and enabling a comprehensive feature set, ensuring practical industrial relevance. Complementing the scan geometry optimisation, an automatic fixture generation tool enables the identified sample pose to be implemented physically. This latter tool can operate in two modes – the first generates a fixture design appropriate for 3D polymer printing, the second generates the assembly specification for a reconfigurable fixture kit.
