Abstract

The fashion industry is undergoing a transformative shift as sustainability becomes a central concern alongside aesthetics and consumer experience. At this intersection of technology and environmental responsibility, Virtual Try-On (VTO) systems emerge as a revolutionary innovation redefining the boundaries of sustainable fashion. This chapter examines the evolution of virtual try-on technology from early static digital catalogs to advanced AR-, VR and AI-driven immersive platforms and analyzes its role in reducing fashion’s environmental footprint. By minimizing the need for physical samples, lowering return rates caused by inaccurate sizing and enabling data-driven design and production decisions, VTO contributes significantly to waste reduction, resource efficiency and carbon emission mitigation. Beyond operational sustainability, virtual try-on enhances personalization, inclusivity and consumer confidence, fostering more mindful consumption behaviors. The study also critically addresses challenges related to technological limitations data privacy, ethical use of biometric information and accessibility. Ultimately, the chapter positions virtual try-on as a key enabler of a digitally integrated, environmentally responsible fashion ecosystem one that aligns innovation, consumer empowerment and sustainability to shape a greener future for the global fashion industry.
