Children’s Literature: No Opting Out of Storytime: Inclusive Children’s Literature as a Democratic Imperative in the Language Arts Classroom
Abstract
This column frames the recent Supreme Court decision in the case of Mahmoud v. Taylor (2025) as an attempt to divorce Language Arts instruction from its democratic imperative to embrace the stories of everyone in our communities. It offers a call to action to our field to explicitly proclaim the civic purpose of literacy education and imbue our practice with civic learning.
