Abstract

Abstract This research paper presents an analytical study of the concept of musical instrument classification within the Indian musical tradition across the ancient, medieval, and modern periods. Instrumentation classification serves as a vital pedagogical and systematic framework, categorizing instruments based on their sound production techniques, structural design, and functional roles in music. In the ancient period, the “Chaturvidha” (four-fold) classification system categorized instruments into Tata (stringed), Avanaddha (percussion/membranophones), Sushira (wind), and Ghana (solid/idiophones). This system evolved during the medieval era with the integration and development of new instruments. In the modern era, technological advancements have led to the emergence of electronic and digital instruments, further broadening the scope of classification. The objective of this study is to highlight the historical evolutionary process of instrument classification, its necessity, and its significance in music education, performance, manufacturing, and research. The findings suggest that classification not only simplifies the theoretical study of musicology but also aids in understanding the rich heritage and continuous evolution of Indian music.
