Abstract

TYPES OF COMPARISONS IN COMPARATIVE SYNTAX: A METHODOLOGICAL NOTE Abstract This methodological paper outlines key approaches to data comparison in comparative grammar, with a focus on syntax. It illustrates each method through representative examples—mainly syntactic parameters of variation as defined in generative grammar and classical linguistic typology—while also pointing out their respective limitations. Major comparative approaches tend to identify macroparameters, whereas other methods are more effective in capturing microvariation.
