Knowledge and perception of the risks associated with ionizing radiation caused by radon among the adult population of the Republic of Moldova
Abstract
Knowledge and perception of the risks associated with ionizing radiation caused by radon among the adult population of the Republic of Moldova. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas, responsible for most of the population"s exposure to ionizing radiation. Although its health effects, especially the risk of lung cancer, are well documented, public awareness remains low in many regions. As part of the STEAM project, an opinion poll was conducted in the Republic of Moldova to assess the level of knowledge, risk perception and attitudes of the population towards radon. The results show that over 75% of respondents know nothing or know very little about radon, and perceptions of risks are often influenced by myths or incorrect information. However, most respondents consider it important to test homes, even if they do not know how to do it. The survey highlights the urgent need for well-structured information campaigns, using trusted sources such as family doctors and public health institutions. Effective communication of radon risks is essential for the protection of public health.
