Evaluation of wells and groundwater distribution systems in the southern region of the Republic of Moldova
Abstract
This paper examines the current status of groundwater abstraction infrastructure in the Southern Development Region of the Republic of Moldova, focusing on the evolution and functionality of wells, boreholes, and springs during the period 2014-2024. Based on official data from environmental and regional institutions, the study identifies major territorial disparities in the exploitation and maintenance of decentralized water sources. Although over 1,400 boreholes are recorded in the region, less than 55% are actively used, and a significant share of wells and springs remain unmaintained, posing risks to public health. The analysis also highlights the uneven distribution of investment and institutional capacity at the local level, with only a few districts showing sustained efforts in infrastructure modernization. The findings underline the urgent need for integrated regional interventions to rehabilitate existing systems, protect natural water sources, and improve the administrative capacity of local authorities. A comprehensive and sustainable groundwater management strategy is essential to ensure safe, equitable, and longterm access to drinking water for rural communities in southern Moldova.
