Abstract

The Botna River basin represents a relatively small area, but with remarkable geographical and historical diversity, with a rich heritage, but insufficiently researched, known and valued. The purpose of the research is to inventory and evaluate the tangible cultural heritage in the Botna River basin from the perspective of its promotion and valorisation. The research used the official documents and is based on the official database, with various methods being applied, especially documentary analysis, direct field observation, aerial captures taken with the DJI Mini 3 drone, the cartographic method, by applying the QGIS v.3.32 Geographic Information System. The tangible cultural heritage of the Botna River Basin comprises 157 sites, over 1/3 of which are archaeological sites. Some of the identified cultural values have considerable potential to be nominated for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List, especially in the cross-border context of Trajan"s Wall, which also crosses other countries in the region (the similar network of sites within Romania"s borders was already included on the UNESCO list in 2024 - with the name "Frontiers of the Roman Empire - Dacia", dossier: 1718).
