The profile of refereeing in the romanian rugby championship: quantitative analysis and optimization directions
Abstract
The article analyzes the refereeing in the Romanian Rugby Championship (2019-2023), by evaluating the physical and decision-making activity of the match officials. The research was based on 16 matches from the SuperLiga and the National Division, with indicators such as the number of accelerations, the duration of continuous running, the frequency of refereeing gestures and the application of the advantage rule being tracked. The results indicate a moderate level of physical strain and a high frequency of technical interventions, characteristic of a fragmented style of play, with frequent stops. The application of the advantage is used in a more conservative way than in international competitions, which limits the fluidity of the game and highlights the need for a methodological adaptation in refereeing. The study highlights the importance of integrated training of referees, both physically and decision-making, in accordance with European standards. The conclusions provide a reference framework for improving the training of rugby referees, with the potential to be applied in national strategies for the development of sports refereeing.
