Evaluation of affective dimensions in the personality of patients with pathological gambling in Romania
Abstract
The present article provides an analysis of the correlation between affective disorders (depression and anxiety) and the severity of gambling pathology, highlighting the significant involvement of emotional vulnerabilities in the persistence and development of problematic gambling behaviors. Epidemiological studies indicate a high prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptomatology among individuals with gambling disorder, with these affective disturbances being associated not only with impaired emotional coping mechanisms but also with increased resistance to therapeutic interventions. In our study, conducted on a sample of 115 subjects from Galați, Romania, a statistically significant positive correlation was confirmed between the severity of gambling behavior and the intensity of affective symptoms, with anxiety demonstrating a more pronounced presence than depression. These findings underscore the necessity of implementing multidimensional therapeutic interventions aimed at both reducing compulsive gambling behaviors and strengthening emotional resources, with the goal of improving quality of life and preventing relapse. In conclusion, an integrated approach addressing both affective disorders and gambling pathology is crucial for enhancing treatment efficacy and mitigating adverse effects on individuals' mental health.
