Abstract

After 1944, Soviet ideological control in the Moldavian SSR aimed to integrate Bessarabia into the Soviet system and create a "new man" by eliminating Romanian identity. The period from 1944 to 1950 was marked by brutal repression against "bourgeois-nationalist" intellectuals, wealthy peasants ("kulaks") who resisted collectivization, and "collaborators.". Soviet security organs arrested thousands and liquidated Romanian organizations. To accelerate collectivization, poor peasants were incited against "kulaks," and purges occurred in education and the party apparatus, culminating in the deportation of over 35,000 people in 1949. Intensified propaganda, including through the press and cultural control, sought to convince the population that their true identity was Soviet, erasing any connection to their Romanian past.
