Deixis in the tourist text
Abstract
The article investigates the role of deictic markers in tourist texts, drawing on a pragmatic approach to language. Deixis is considered one of the clearest indicators of the dependence of language on context, and its use in tourist discourse highlights both descriptive and persuasive functions. Deictic markers - personal, spatial, temporal, discourse-related, and social - not only clarify references but also construct a sense of proximity between sender and receiver. Pronouns and verb forms establish interpersonal connections, adverbs of time and place situate the experience in the present and create a sense of authenticity, while imperatives enhance the conative dimension of the message. The analysis also emphasizes the intercultural dimension of deixis, as differences between Romanian and English confirm that meaning is adapted to the linguistic and cultural context. The findings demonstrate that deixis is not merely a grammatical category but a fundamental mechanism through which tourist texts create involvement, participation, and persuasion, transforming the message into an attractive and convincing experience for the reader.
